SAN DIEGO — Wilfred might be the strangest sitcom on television. The show stars Elijah Wood as a depressed dude enlisted to watch his new neighbor’s dog, but that’s just the start.

“Instead of seeing just a cute, loveable little dog, he sees this big Australian guy dressed up in a cheap dog suit with a painted dog nose, and he’s like, ‘What is going on?’” says Fiona Gubelmann, who plays Wood’s cute neighbor Jenna. “Is he going crazy? Am I crazy? You don’t know what’s happening.”

Gubelmann describes the black comedy’s tone as “kind of like Harvey meets Calvin and Hobbes meets Fight Club” in the Wired.com video interview above, taped during Comic-Con International last month.

Wilfred, which is based on an Australian television show of the same name, gets a lot of mileage out of the outrageous exploits of the guy in the cheap dog suit. Jason Gann, who plays the dope-smoking, beer-swilling and strangely insightful Wilfred in the Aussie original as well as the American version.

Gann riffs on what it’s like pulling dog duty in the video. “I think all dogs are perverts and weirdos,” Gann says. “Yeah, I don’t have a dog. I don’t want one. I’m all dogged out.”

Wilfred airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on FX.
