Big cities can be pretty scary places, what with all the muggings, crazy homeless people and … TIE fighters.

Upcoming mobile game Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner will use the iPhone’s camera to capture players’ real surroundings and tack on some science fiction. Developed by Vertigore Games and published by THQ, Falcon Gunner will supposedly be available in the Apple Store by the end of November.

“This is

a deep shooter,” Vertigore CEO Josh Shabtai said in a phone interview with Wired.com. “You progress through a handful of episodes that are broken down into sublevels, shooting enemies and collecting upgrades.”

Those upgrades, which include tools like an extension on how long you can use your gun before it overheats, help keep the game balanced and interesting. Special weapons such as concussive missiles will also be available.

“The game uses a gyroscope and compass to track your body’s movement,” Shabtai explained.

It’s also the first augmented-reality Star Wars game. You’ll get to play through consequential Star Wars events like the Battle of Hoth and the Death Star escape, whether you’re sitting in a subway or watching a sunrise.

Falcon Gunner will cost “less than $10,” according to Shabtai. The staff at Vertigore built the game’s technology from scratch and self-funded the project.

“I’m pretty psyched because we coded this in C, from the ground up,” Shabtai said. “This isn’t a Flash game.”

Although the game also ships with a non-augmented-reality mode featuring prerendered Star Wars backgrounds, I can’t see why you’d want to use it. There’s something strange and unique about shooting down Empire forces inside your hometown, like you’re the only one who can save your fellow unsuspecting citizens from Darth Vader and his minions.

My plan? Become an astronaut, so I can shoot TIE fighters in space. Then cry because I’ll never be a Jedi.
