In the days before the release of the iPhone, Nintendo was the undisputed king of handheld gaming. Currently, Nintendo sees Apple as one of their biggest rivals in the handheld gaming industry. The gaming apps found on iOS devices just caught the interest of gamers and non-gamers alike hurting Nintendo’s sales. It is a bit surprising to see that Nintendo is set to release their first official iOS app in Japan called Pokemon Say Tap? BW. Although the game probably won’t ever be released outside of Japan, it does mark a change in Nintendo’s attitude toward smartphone gaming. Pokemon Say Tap? BW is not the typical Pokemon gaming that one might think of, it’s a rhythm based care game instead. Pretty much, you tap various cards that appear on the screen in time with the music to progress through the game. Seems more just like one of the various music based songs with a Pokemon theme to it in reality. Although this isn’t the most exciting game that Nintendo could have been releasing but this might just be the company testing the waters to see the potential. We are pretty sure an official Super Mario Bros app on the iPhone would probably make it to the top of the charts pretty quickly. If Nintendo does decide to bring certain titles to non-Nintendo devices, then it wouldn’t be the first time that they have done so. In the early 1990s, Nintendo did release a series of educational titles featuring Mario and the crew for the Mac and PC. Games such as Mario is Missing!, a geography based game, and Mario Teaches Typing are just a few of the titles that appeared on multiple systems that weren’t made by Nintendo. It is still nice to know that Nintendo still makes games for people of all ages when the press just seems to showcase violent videogames lately. Let’s see what this app release leads to.
