Developer Leo van der Veen has created an iPhone app that lets you scan any barcode and convert it into a melody.
The app, called Barcodas, works on any EAN or UPC barcode. Once you have scanned the barcode, the app will interpret the lines of the barcode as different notes depending on the number they represent (so a zero means no note, while a 1 is a low note and a 9 is a high note) and the spacing between each line. You can change the harmonic scale and the tempo of the music using a beats-per-minute slider. You can also share your favorite barcode tunes on Facebook. This means that you can make sweet music from mundane purchases like Monster Munch, cotton buds and loo paper.
Van der Veen explains on his website: “Imagine walking into a supermarket filled with thousands of tunes to discover [a] supermarket symphony.”
The app currently only works with iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. You can see it in action in the video above. If you discover any products that generate a particularly awesome melody, tell us about them in the comments below.
