Sony’s New Streaming Music Service To Take On iTunes

Sony recently stirred up some competition for the iTunes store as the tech giant launched a new subscription-based streaming music service. The service takes direct aim at iTunes’ dominance in the world of of digital music and entertainment and according to Sony, they don’t expect a blatant iTunes’ knock-off.

Sony is planning something different here though. “Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity” is different from iTunes in the sense that the content provided is streamed directly to its users. You don’t have to download or purchase songs or albums at all. The service won’t be available on mobile devices such as the iPhone given the nature of the technology being used. However, the service as a whole isn’t even available in US or Canada yet. North America seems like it will largely be shut out until some time next year, along with other countries such as Austrailia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and New Zealand. Currently only people in the U.K and Ireland can enjoy the service being offered by Sony.

…a subscription gives users access to a catalog of about 6 million songs, which can be streamed across Sony’s Internet-connected devices like the PlayStation 3, personal computers and Bravia TVs. The service can be synchronized with a user’s existing music files, including iTunes.

Sony’s executive vice president, Kazuo Hirai says that the launch of the new service will initially serve to enhance the attractiveness of Sony-branded products, but eventually the cloud-based digital music platform will be able to “stand on its own.” What do you think of Sony’s new service? Do you think it will start to attract users over from the iTunes? Let us know in the comments below!
