Skype has recently updated its iPhone app to include video calling over Wi-Fi and 3G. With Skype 3.0 you can make two-way video calls to other iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G users. iOS users who don’t have front-facing cameras can still receive video but they can only transmit audio for obvious reasons. This version of Skype also allows for landscope mode as well as portrait mode.
If that wasn’t enough, making video calls to Mac and PC desktop users is now also possible with this updated version as well. You can now stay connected in a more personal way, even if you are at either end of the country. One thing to keep in mind though is that data charges do apply if you are using 3G, so if you don’t have an unlimited plan, you may want t keep an eye on the length of the video calls because video ends up eating much more bandwidth than regular audio calls.
Until recently, video calling has recently been relegated to the world of Sci-Fi. For many years now, movies have depicted a future where videophones seem to be common and now that future is here. (With devices that fit in our pockets no less). With Skype adding video to their popular calling app, the move will surely give Apple’s FaceTime a run for it’s money. Competition in this segment of the market will only lead to bigger and better things. As of right now, video calling is still in its infancy, but as the technology continues to evolve, it will become a standard feature in countless devices. Just wait until Apple comes out the with a holographic iPhone, then video calling will be really interesting. Have you tried out the new Skype yet? If so, what are your thoughts and opinions?
