Fantasy Casting Posters Reimagine Classic Sci-Fi Films

Angelina Jolie as A Clockwork Orange’s ultraviolent antihero Alex? Believe it. In artist Sean Hartter’s alternate universe, science fiction films get reimagined with new cast members in a spot-on homage to midcentury B movie graphics.

“I’m a total sci-fi geek,” Hartter said in an e-mail to Wired.com. “These posters are based on the idea that they’re from multiple universes, which frees me up to tinker with time frames and poster design.”

A freelance illustrator who lives in Maine, Hartter said he’s a big fan of grindhouse and exploitation movie posters, with their bold graphics and over-the-top verbiage.

“This is an exercise in ‘what if’ that has really taken on a life of its own,” he said.

Hartter, who sells 11-inch by 17-inch prints for $16, jokes that he’s “not the King of Photoshop,” but his witty reworkings of genre conventions suggest he might be a minor prince of pop art.

See the gallery above for a sampling of Hartter’s mashups, which include Tron (if it had been directed by David Cronenberg); Inception (starring ’50s heartthrob Tab Hunter); Daredevil (with William Shatner wearing the mask); The Matrix (as blaxpoitation flick); Watchmen (with Brigitte Bardot); and The X-Men (with Béla Lugosi as Magneto).
