One of the more exciting features of iOS 4.2.1 is AirPlay, which allows you to wirelessly stream videos from iTunes and iOS devices to the new Apple TV 2G. Unfortunately you cannot use your device as an AirPlay speaker… until now. Audio cannot be streamed from one iOS device to another iOS device or from iTunes on your computer to an iPhone or iPod Touch. The folks over at TouchBite have made it possible to turn your jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch into real speakers compatible with AirPlay. You can follow the steps below to see how:

How to Turn your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch iOS 4.x into AirPlay Speakers:

Step 1:

Jailbreak your iOS 4.x iDevice and then download the required files from here

Step 2:

Unzip the downloaded archive you will see two files:

  • airtunesd
  • com.apple.airtunesd.plist

Step 3:

Copy the file airtunesd in /usr/libexec of your device.

Step 4:

Copy the file com.apple.airtunesd.plist in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons folder.

Step 5:

Set file permissions to 0755 using Cyberduck or iFile directly on your device.

Step 6:

Restart your iOS device.

Step 7:

Now open iTunes and play any song. If you followed all the steps correctly, you should notice the AirPlay icon in the lower right corner. Click on it and you will see a speaker icon with the name of the iOS device you want to turn into an AirPlay speaker. If for some reason you don’tsee the AirPlay icon in iTunes, go into iTunes preferences, then Devices, and then turn on the check “Search remote speakers with AirPlay.” If you stilldon’t see your device in the list of AirPlay speakers, make sure that the computer and the device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Reboot both if necessary and check the file permissions.

You should have it all set up. Now you should be able to use your iPhone or iPod Touch as speakers using AirPlay.
