Augmented Reality App “Word Lens” For iOS Offers Real Time Translation

Although there have been quite a few augmented reality apps for the iOS since the ability to use them was introduced in iOS 3.1. Since their introduction, apps like Cyclopedia, Wikitude, and gaming apps like A.R Drone

(which lets you control four-propellered flying machines with the help of an iPhone application) have all been around. It’s now time to turn the attention over to another app which uses this feature to the next level.

The app developers over at Quest Visual have come up with their newest app called Word Lens for the iPhone and the iPod Touch, which translates words from one language to another in real time. Using the built-in video camera on the iPhone and the current iPod Touch 4G, the application is able to translated text superimposed on the screen of the iPhone offering a quick real-time translation without the need for using services like Google Translate for example. It is very similar to an advanced version of Google Goggles, a service which already offers image to text recognition albeit in a much simpler form.

The app took two and a half years to develop according to Quest Visual, and as of right now, only translation from English to Spanish and vice versa is supports. The developers are currently working on adding more language packs in subsequent versions. Each of the language packs available now (English to Spanish and Spanish to English) currently costs $4.99. While that may seem expensive, the results are pretty spectacular, as you can see in the video below:

Much like Google Translate, the translation is done on a word to word basis so it is futile to expect perfect transliteration results. However, we think the idea is not to be grammatically correct here, but to offer people a basic idea as to what a sign in a different language or item in a restaurant menu could possibly mean. That is something this app can certainly handle.

You can download the app from the App Store using this iTunes link.
