Video: Wheelchair Phenom Nails First Double Backflip

Double backflips look pretty amazing when done on a bike, but in a wheelchair? Well, that’s never been done before — until now.

Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham, an 18-year-old from Las Vegas, recently pulled off the world’s first wheelchair double backflip, after several failed (and

painful-looking) attempts at Camp Woodward, just east of State College, Pennsylvania.

Fotheringham, who has spina bifida, a paralysis-causing birth defect where the spinal canal and backbone don’t fully close, already set the world record for nailing the first-ever backflip in a wheelchair back in 2008. Although, Fotheringham had been landing the maneuver for almost two years by that point, as this 2006 video shows:

Here’s footage of Wotheringham’s double backflip, which solidifies his place as one of this generation’s dominant young wheelchair athletes:
