One of the major new features introduced in iOS 4.1 is High Dynamic Range (HDR) photos. It seems like they will only be

available to iPhone 4 users and won’t be available to iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users.

At Apple’s special event on September 1, Steve Jobs explained that HDR photos are created using 3 photos taken in rapid succession, one normal, one under-exposed, and one over-exposed. The photos are then combined using sophisticated algorithms to create an enhanced composite photo. The webpage describes the new features in the iOS 4.1 software update on Apple’s website states that the HDR photography feature will be available on the iPhone. It doesn’t mention the availability of the feature on the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 3G.

TiPB is speculating that one of the reasons for not bringing the feature to the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users could be due to the slower process and lower 256MB RAM. The iPhone 4 comes with Apple’s A4 processor and 512MB RAM. There is still a glimmer of hope for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users as cdevwill has announced that he will be releasing a hack that will enable the feature for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G users. It should already be expected that it will only be possible if you have a jailbroken iPhone. Users can download apps like Pro HDR that have been available on the App Store for quite sometime that bring this functionality to the iPhone. As reported earlier, according to Apple’s UK and Spanish Site, iOS 4.1 is scheduled to be released tomorrow, September 8 (although Apple has updated their International websites to say that iOS 4.1 will be coming soon just like the US site). In addition to the HDR feature, iOS 4.1 also includes features such as HD video upload, ability to buy TV show rentals and Game Center, Apple’s social gaming network, as well as the fix for the proximity sensor, Bluetooth, and iPhone 3G performance problems.

What are your thoughts of the HDR feature not coming to the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G? Are you looking forward to the iOS 4.1 update?
