iPhone users in New York and New Jersey are now able to participate in a new pilot program that lets users pay their transit fares wirelessly with Visa payWave. Commuters who use New York City Transit, NJ Transit, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will now have access to this program. For now, use in the New York Subway is limited to 28 stops along the Lexington line but if all goes well, it will be expanded across the entire subway system in the future. Travelers who want to use Visa payWave must have a special sensor equipped to their iPhones and use an app to wirelessly pay fares. With the app running, riders simply wave their smartphones in front of a card reader and a payment is made electronically. This will save riders both time and effort by eliminating the need to stand in line to buy tickets. Technology like this will make fumbling for tickets a thing of the past.
Visa in conjunction with Bank of America is working hard to bring smartphone payment systems like this to all retailers all over the New York area. Visa has also been deploying the payWave system to other cities such as London, Paris, and Singapore. If rumors are true, Apple’s next iPhone model will include some form of electronic payment system such as Visa’s payWave. Next year’s “one more thing” might turn out to be the iWallet. We’ll just have to wait and see what Apple has up their sleeves next.
