Code monkeys at bustling startups work long hours and often need some tasty refreshment in a pinch. Good thing Twitter headquarters isn’t far from the Wired offices, as our very own Beer Robot was able to make the pilgrimage for the next contest in our October Madness beer tournament.

The Location: Twitter, 795 Folsom Street, San Francisco

The Brewery: Deschutes Brewery, Bend, Oregon

The Beer: Black Butte Porter and Mirror Pond Pale Ale

The Method of Dispense: Beer Robot (Black Butte Porter) and a standard kegerator (Mirror Pond Pale Ale)

How They Fared: The winner of 20 awards and commendations since 1996, Black Butte Porter is Deschutes’ self-anointed flagship beer and runs at 5.6 percent alcohol. Many of the tasters appreciated its full flavor and roasted finish. “It tasted like a milkshake,” said one commenter who obviously likes their milkshakes with a kick. “Earthy” and “chocolicious” were other ways the Twitter folks took their Black Butte Porter. “It was a like a merlot versus a champagne,” said one drinker who didn’t mind either beverage, apparently.

Though Black Butte is Deschutes’ flagship beer, Mirror Pond Pale Ale is the brewery’s most popular choice, according to the brewmasters. Five percent alcohol by volume, Mirror Pond has garnered more than a dozen accolades over the past 17 years, thanks to its combination of four different hops brought together in a sweet, malty concoction. “Didn’t make me feel like I ate an entire turkey,” said one taster looking forward to Thanksgiving. Another noted that Black Butte “can’t hold a candle to Mirror Pond’s clear, pure, clean drinkability.”

Still, when the votes were tallied, the fuller Black Butte Porter emerged with a two-vote victory over the lighter-tasting Mirror Pond Pale Ale, and yet another fine brew advances in our quest to find the Most Wired Beer.
