In Sweltering Heat, Boont Amber Ale Bests a Summer Seasonal

These are hot times in San Francisco, and nothing beats a refreshing seasonal summer ale — or so you might think. A swath of diehard beer tasters converged on the upstairs mezzanine of Bullitt in San Francisco to see if a popular amber ale stalwart could triumph over a scrappy summer seasonal.

The Location: Bullitt,

2209 Polk St., San Francisco

The Brewery: Anderson Valley Brewing Company, Boonville, Calif.

The Beer: Boont Amber Ale and Summer Solstice Cerveza Crema

The Method of Dispense: A modified beverage cooler with double taps coupled to kegs

How They Fared: A one-time silver medalist at the Great American Beer Festival, Boont Amber Ale has been an award-winning fixture of AVBC’s lineup for some 15 years running. Dark and richly flavored, Boont boasts a deceiving 5.8 percent alcohol by volume. “More flavorful and doesn’t have an aftertaste that lingers,” said one fan. “It smelled and tasted like pine trees!” said one nature lover.

Summer Solstice Cerveza Crema is named as such, according to AVBC, for two reasons. First, it’s proven to be a popular selection with their Hispanic clientele. Secondly, it’s a cool name. And on a day where temperatures in San Francisco cracked 90 degrees, “cool” was the operative word for this 5.6-percent alcohol, copper-colored ale. “Fruity and delicious!” raved one taster, while others compared it to a creamsicle that was “refreshing” and “crisp.”

When the votes were tallied, it was Boont Amber Ale who emerged with a commanding five-vote victory over Summer Solstice, and so Boont rolls in our trek to name the Most Wired Beer.

Coming up: The next October Madness event will be tonight at 5:30 pm at Thirsty Bear (661 Howard St., San Francisco), where we’ll be serving up some of the brewery’s best selections, Valencia Wheat and Rum Runner.

And on Friday night, we’ll be at Tied House in Mountain View starting at 5:30 pm, so gather up your friends, come on down the Peninsula, and soak in the Silicon Valley vibe with some free beer.
