To convey the trippy visions experienced by a Tokyo drug dealer who gets shot while high on psychedelics, Enter the Void director Gaspar Noe conducted firsthand research: He traveled to a Peruvian jungle and drank ayahuasca, a psychotropic concoction made from vines.

“It’s legal there and extremely hallucinogenic,” Noe says.

The active ingredient in the

traditional brew is dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, drug of choice for Enter the Void protagonist Alex (played by Cyril Roy).

In a telephone interview with Wired.com, Noe described the visual effect caused by the drug: “Everything seems like it’s made out of neon lights,” Noe says. “When people smoke DMT, they say, ‘Oh I thought I was in the movie Tron. ‘ Everything is made out of bright lines.”

Noe’s unrated movie, running two hours, 17 minutes, features lengthy psychedelic sequences hinted at in the clip above. To set the stage for the blindingly vivid special effects, Noe and his team crafted a hyperaggressive, strobe-lit opening credits sequence, embedded below.

Enter the Void opens Friday in Seattle and San Francisco, followed by a staggered release in other markets.
