Stuff gets blown up, jokes get made, hammers get hurled and outrageously cool crime-fighters strut their stuff in the gripping new trailer for The Avengers, which offers our first real look at the new Hulk.

The clip includes a full dose of slow-mo chaos that prompts Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury to assemble his team of superhero all-stars with this epic call to arms: “There was an idea to bring together a group of remarkable people so when we needed them, they could fight the battles that we never could.”

The teaser for Marvel Entertainment’s upcoming The Avengers also includes glimpses of Bruce “Incredible Hulk” Banner (played by Mark Ruffalo, who takes over the role in the superhero team-up), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.).

Downey, as per usual, gets all the best lines.

“I don’t play well with others,” he snaps at Captain America, who doesn’t stand a chance at out-quipping the playboy/billionaire/inventor. However, Iron Man turns dead serious when he says, “If we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damn sure we’ll avenge it.”

The action looks good as the Avengers face some sort of threat posed by Loki (Tom Hiddleston). And — no surprise here — director Joss Whedon seems able to bottle the comedic magic that beats at the heart of most Marvel movies.

Check the gallery for all the official images from The Avengers, which blow away those cellphone set photos and videos that have been dribbling out online.

The Avengers opens May 4.
