Google TV Goes Full-On 'Boob Tube' With Porn App Debut

Sex sells, and Google is adding more of it to its product lineup. No, no — not on Google image search. This porn appears directly on Google TV.

Seasoned smut peddlers Vivid Entertainment launched its Vivid for Google TV app on Monday, the first TV application to bring X-rated flicks to Google’s set-top box.

“It is a central part of our making Vivid available everywhere concept,” said Steven Hirsch, Vivid co-founder and co-chairman, in a statement. Hirsch says Vivid aims to spread across multiple platforms — including mobile devices and tablets — perhaps bringing a whole new level of resonance to HP’s TouchPad tablet moniker.

Google’s app guidelines are liberal — at least compared to the famously conservative parameters set by Apple, whose stance on most questionable content is to bar it from its App Store entirely. Apple made headlines last year, for example, after banning from the App Store an illustrated version of James Joyce’s modernist classic, Ulysses because it contained cartoon images of a woman’s bare breasts.

Of course, Google’s app goes a few steps beyond cartoon boobs. Much of Vivid’s, er, entertainment — including its infamous X-rated parodies of mainstream, pop-culture TV and movies — can be streamed in high definition to the Google TV set-top box (for 18-year-old eyes only, of course).

Sadly, non-paying types will have to resort to squinting at scrambled channels, as the app only brings Vivid video to the TV if you’re already a Vivid Entertainment website subscriber.
