Chromeo is largely known for two things: the kind of smart, sexy dance jams that can get high school gyms and indie rock clubs moving, and an extremely unique
For the electrofunk duo’s latest record, out Tuesday, David Macklovitch (aka Dave 1) and Patrick Gemayel (P-Thugg) crafted a more polished sound — something to show maturity and sophistication. But that doesn’t mean they’ve lost their sense of humor about the sometimes-cheeky tunes they make.
Take, for instance, the new album’s title, Business Casual, which came from the dress code suggestion at a New York restaurant.
“We thought that could be the name of a joke band. Like, the skit that Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake have on SNL — that should be called Business Casual,” laughs singer and guitarist Dave 1. “We just thought, ‘We can’t use that, it’s too jokey.’ But then we were like, ‘Well actually, it’s kind of cool.’”
Wired.com asked Dave 1 (“business”) and P-Thugg (“casual”) for their top five must-have fashion items.
P-Thugg’s Fashion Tips
1. Air Jordans: P-Thugg starts with the feet. His essential sneaker is the Nike Air Jordan, preferably one of the earlier styles: “It’s mostly from III-VI, but my favorite is IV, black/cement. I’ll extend to VII, but never VIII or IX. Fuggetaboutit.”
2. New Era hat: Going from bottom to top, the next essential is a New Era hat for your dome. “Matching your Jordans, preferably,” Thugg says.
3. Do-rag: “I’m going to bring back the do-rag soon,” he says. “Hopefully.” Keep hope alive, man.
4. Wood chain: Lil Wayne and Gucci Mane may still be on gold and platinum bling, but for P-Thugg a wood Jesus piece is the way of the future. “Gold chains will never really be out — it’s just time to change it up,” he says. “Gold chains will be back in two years.”
5. Kente prints: If wood chains weren’t enough, Thugg also would like to single-handedly bring back the kente print. Someone call American Apparel. You heard it here first.
Dave 1’s Fashion Tips
1. Black leather jacket: According to Dave 1, a black leather coat can work with almost anything and always look fresh — especially if you’re Dave 1. From Chromeo. “I’ve toured the whole summer with the same leather jacket before,” he says.
2. Chelsea boots: A good pair of Chelsea boots may be hard to locate, but Dave 1 says they work because they can carry a lot of class and “they’re a little rock ‘n’ roll.”
3. Tight jeans: Not skinny jeans, mind you. A well-tailored pair of jeans can last a long time while still looking dapper. “You can’t be wearing Cheap Mondays jeans past 25 years old: They’re cool and everything but they’re a girl jean and they’re for kids who do the Jerk,” Dave says. “If it takes repeated trips to the tailor to get them right, do it.”
4. Ray-Bans: They worked in Risky Business, they’ll work for you, too.
5. Blazer: A really nice, tailored blazer is also key. A Dior jacket, if you can manage it. “Every man should have a couple well-crafted blazers,” Dave says. “With these items you can throw on a $5 T-shirt or any kind of vintage shirt and it’ll look cool.”
