A recent tweet from Comex suggests that the forthcoming untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 is probably going to be a Cydia package over your existing RedSn0w tethered jailbreak and you don’t need to restore or re-jailbreak your iDevice. The recent line of tweets read the following:

Comex: it’s probably going to be a Cydia package. if I can get it to work.

When GP34MVP asked Comex “what do you mean by that”, Comex replied:

Comex: @GP34MVP that everyone’s wrong including @MuscleNerd :p

As for the untethered jailbreak, although it was promised earlier, the jailbreak for the iPhone 4 will NOT be arriving by this Christmas. The untethered jailbreak exploit by Comex is said to jailbreak the iPhone 4 and other fourth generation devices such as the iPod Touch 4G and the iPad. Right now specific models of the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad running iOS 4.2.1 can only be jailbroken via the “tethered” method which means they need to be plugging into your Windows or Mac PC and rebooted using Redsn0w on every reboot.

While at this point, we aren’t sure about the exact status of the window of time the jailbreak will be released, we do know that the untethered jailbreak software will be released very soon. We will keep everyone updates as more information comes in. You can follow us on Twitter and/or subscribe to our RSS feed to updates with information regarding your iDevices.
