According to a report from DigiTimes, the AMOLED and OLED shortages that we have been witnessing for quite some time are soon to become a thing of the past. The Far East companies are planning to dramatically increase their production of AMOLED and OLED displays. Panel makers from Korea and Taiwan are focusing on AMOLED production, while “many research facilities (in China) have been developing OLED.”

Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) team was the pioneer that began the AMOLED mass production in 2009 and it was a revolution in its own right, as the AMOLED and Super AMOLED displays are now seen by some people as a synonym for quality. SMD’s AMOLED market share is expected to exceed 90% by the end of the year. Given the fact that a few handsets’ sales were hampered by the (Super) AMOLED displays shortage, it’s natural that Samsung is building a new factory that is set to start operations in June 2011. It’s expected to increase production ten fold from 3 million to 30 million AMOLED panels a month. A few other companies like the Taiwan-based AU Optronics (AUO) and Chimei Innolux (CMI) are already manufacturing AMOLED displays with plans to increase production further, while Wintek (another Taiwan company) is set to start producing AMOLED displays soon. Reportedly, a supply-chain for OLED panels is being created in China and mass production has already started.

It’s pretty much good news for everyone since more devices are likely to use the new technology and provide more crisp and clear quality images and videos.
