An insanely inventive Modest Mouse music video got yanked from the internet after going viral two years ago. Now Fly Trapped in a Jar (An Alien Musical) has been fully authorized by Mouse leader Isaac Brock and hits the web without endangering its makers with enraged phone calls.

Produced by New York’s four-person The Saline Project, the animated piece casts Brock as a frenetic singing head

supported by an ever-proliferating swarm of elfin sidemen cloned from the face of director Adam Toht.

It’s a compelling exercise in brightly colored anarchy, which is what got the filmmakers in trouble in the first place.

Hired by Epic Records to produce a music video for Modest Mouse album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, Saline Project spent months obsessing over the work-in-progress before posting a rough cut in its online portfolio. There, fans discovered the clip and got excited.

The video went viral. Toht got reamed.

“We made a terrible mistake by posting the video,” Toht told Wired.com in an e-mail. “They were furious.”

About three months ago, Toht wrote an impassioned letter to Brock proposing that he take a fresh look at an improved version of the video and the main Mouse relented. On Thursday, Fly Trapped in a Jar (An Alien Musical) made its encore appearance online.

Even though the video was initially designed to hype an album that is now three years old, Toht and company at least have the satisfaction of getting the work back on the web with the blessings of their clients.

“The process of making this thing was nuts.” said Toht. “It was a real labor of love.”
