The car still isn’t done, and the race starts Wednesday. It’s a longshot, even with a San Diego race shop helping him along. But don’t count Caswell out. After all, we’re talking about a man who bought a 1991 BMW for $500 and took third at the WRC Corona Rally Mexico against teams with six-figure budgets.

If he pulls this off, we’ll be there at Baja in the chase vehicle, grinning like fools just like Bill.

The car is slowly coming together. It’s got a 3.0-liter six-cylinder pulled from a 1995 BMW M3 for power. Look for something in the vicinity of 240 horsepower.

The interesting bits in this photo are the Speedway International differential and the three-foot-long Billstein shocks. Oh, and the big honkin’ 33-inch tires. On a BMW. Sweet.

Somewhere, Mario Theissen (head of BMW Motorsports) is thinking, “Baja? Baja? WTF?”
