A Tron mashup crafted by an unemployed movie fan made a big impression on Tron: Legacy producer Sean Bailey, who singled out the clip during a recent Los Angeles press conference.

While discussing Tron: Legacy’s viral-marketing campaign, Bailey saluted the trailer made by by 31-year-old Josh Prescott. The DIY filmmaker took Daft Punk’s electronica as a stylistic point of departure for his own sequence of beauty shots culled from promotional trailers

and music videos for the 3-D sci-fi sequel.

Prescott’s “Rerezzed” clip, which glides along on music by Los Angeles-based trio The Glitch Mob, caught the eye of Bailey and other Tron: Legacy filmmakers.

“At a meeting last week after looking at the Daft Punk ‘Derezzed’ video, we pulled up this piece called ‘Rerezzed‘ that’s really beautiful,” said Bailey, who cited Prescott’s mashup as an example of Tron: Legacy’s grassroots support. “There’s this fascinating back-and-forth in that Tron fans have been evangelizing for the movie, partly out of love for the original … partly because of the early looks at [director] Joe [Kosinski's] work on Legacy.”

The self-taught Prescott got into the Tron trailer business on the strength of his massive 15-minute YouTube video “The Apple Tree: A Tribute to the Glitch Mob” (below).

“Editing is in my blood,” Prescott told Wired.com in an e-mail interview. “I cannot watch a movie or listen to a song without thinking about how to map it all out to connect one with the other.”

For “The Apple Tree,” Prescott spent 200 hours sequencing 700 individual movie clips, which gobbled up a terrabyte of hard-drive storage. After the clip got showcased on Glitch Mob’s Facebook page, social media maven Jenka Gurfinkel recruited Prescott to craft a Tron-sourced trailer for Glitch Mob’s new song, “Animus Vox.”

“The style of its intro and outro was a tip of the hat to Daft Punk,” says Colorado resident Prescott. “The video is meant to be a fun companion to theirs, not a contender. I got nothing but love for Daft Punk.”
