SAN DIEGO — In its five previous seasons, Dexter has embraced some really messed-up topics: ice-truck killers, trinity killers, somebody-didn’t-love-me killers. It only seems right that eventually the show would address religion.

In the Showtime series’ upcoming sixth season, it’s eponymous main character is having something of a crisis of faith.

“Dexter’s coming up against that idea of religion and faith and, of course, he’s not necessarily a spiritual or religious man,” C.S. Lee, who plays lab tech Vince Masuka on the show, says in the Wired.com video above.

There are other surprises in Season 6, which picks up the show’s timeline a year after the Season 5 and brings on guest stars like Edward James Olmos and Mos Def. Masuka will also get into some trouble with his new interns, Lee said.

Lee and co-star David Zayas (Sgt. Angel Batista) both say certain aspects of their characters come naturally.

“I was a cop for 15 years, so there are certain parts of the technical crime scenes that are pretty familiar to me,” Zayas says. “So that part of my work is already in me, which lets me concentrate on the acting part of what I need to do.”

“And me being a pervert all of my life really helps me hone in on the role of Masuka,” Lee jokingly retorts, “and the way I hit on girls is a natural thing.”

Dexter returns to Showtime on Oct. 2.
