Late last month Applidium released VLC Media Player for iPad. VLC, which almost every has probably heard of, is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player, that plays almost every type of media file. Applidium has just released VLC Media Player for iPhone and iPodTouch.

VLC is a free and open source multimedia player. It reads almost every video file, yet it’s very powerful and simple to use.

The player has every codec built-in, meaning you never have to download one again. It is the best go-to media player on desktops and now for the first time ever, it’s on your iPad as well. This means no more converting videos and spending hours waiting for mp4?s to pump out. Being that it is available for free, it is a MUST HAVE on any iDevice.

How To Transfer Media Files From iTunes To Use With VLC:

Step 1:

Download VLC Media Player from iTunes.

Step 2:

Launch iTunes, then click the Apps tab. You will see the File sharing section, select VLC and then Add your files. You can then browse the files on your computer to choose which ones you want to add to your iDevice.

Step 3:

Once you’ve added your movie files to your iDevice, its as easy as opening the VLC app on the iDevice. Your video files will be neatly lined up on a bookshelf much like the one in Apple’s iBooks app.

Note:

DivX and XviD files are supported, but MKV files only play audio. Other file types that had issues on VLC were MPG, MOV, and WMV files… they transferred easily enough, but didn’t display in the app.
