A recent report from the Taiwan Economic News claims that Foxconn may have recently obtained a contract to supply a CDMA variant of the iPhone 4 to Apple in 2011. According to the sources quoted by the newspaper, Foxconn could possibly be shipping as many as 15 million units of the CDMA iPhone since May this year.

It’s speculated that Apple may have awarded an alternate contract to Foxconn in order to meet demand that is expected to exceed Pegatron’s manufacturing capacity. Earlier reports claimed that Pegatron has contracted to ship 10 million CDMA iPhones to Apple by end of this year.

The latest rumors highlight the significant demand that existed for the CDMA iPhone all along. iPhone users in the US have complained about the deteriorating network infrastructure on AT&T for a long time and rumors about a Verizon iPhone have been doing the rounds for as long as the iPhone has existed. More recently, we have seen strong indications for Verizon to actually start carrying the iPhone in the immediate future as well. The carrier is reported to be hiring new call-center staff while AT&T is increasing its focus on smartphones other than the iPhone.

It is worth pointing out that the CDMA iPhone may not be a US-only offering. Reports over the past few weeks also suggested that Apple is talking to CDMA carrier partners in China and India for the launch of such a device. With the launch of iOS 4.2 next month and a possible CDMA iPhone early next year, there are exciting times for Apple fans. A report on the Business Insiderclaims that the company is getting ready to host a “secret” iOS Developers conference in California next week. While the exact agenda of the meet is not known yet, we may expect the event to primarily focus on interaction between Apple engineers and app developers in order to improve the quality of apps on the App Store.

With the scheduled release of iOS 4.2 expected to be early November, there are also speculations tht the conference could include the official launch of iOS 4.2. iOS 4.2 will be the first time for the iPhone and iPad to a common software platform and many people are eagerly looking forward to its public release.
