Apple

has seeded the final GM release of iOS 4.2 to developers. The recently released Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 (based on Geohot’s Limera1n exploit) can jailbreak almost all (with an exception of the iPad) of the current idevices on iOS 4.2. This has also been confirmed by MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team.

Note for jailbreakers:

Jailbreakers can use RedSn0w 0.9.6 beta 2 to jailbreak iOS 4.2 GM, simply by pointing redsn0w at the 4.1 IPSW (instead of iOS 4.2GM/beta). Though, the beta’s and GM version are for developers only, considering not many jailbreak apps/tweaks are working yet, including Cydia which needs to be upgraded for use with iOS 4.2. However, if all you want to do is enable afc2 (to use iFunBox or other file browsers), or to tweak settings like Battery % and Homescreen wallpapers, then go for it (if you have valid paid access to the GM seed).  Be sure to uncheck the Cydia box.

Note for unlockers:

  • If your baseband is 05.14.04 / 2.10.4, Ultrasn0w unlock won’t work on your iPhone. You will have to wait till iOS 4.2 is released, as the Dev-Team plans on updating the tool after the new OS is released.

ULTRASN0W UNLOCKERS BEWARE!!ULTRASN0W UNLOCKERS BEWARE!! The biggest mistake you can make (and it is a big one!) is lettings iTunes restore to the official IPSW — you’ll lose the unlock and won’t be able to go back!  You must use Option-Restore, not just the Restore button by itself.  Then navigate to your custom IPSW — not to the stock one!  If you accidentally started a restore to the official IPSW, unplug your iPhone immediately before the restore gets to the “Updating Firmware” step!

Supported devices:

  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPod touch 4G / 3G / 2G
  • iPad (Not Supported Yet)

How To Jailbreak iOS 4.2 Gold Master With Redsn0w 0.9.6 Beta 2:

Step 1:

Download iOS 4.2 & iOS 4.1 (required for Redsn0w 0.9.6b2) for your version of iOS device.

Step 2:

Update your idevice to iOS 4.2 firmware.

Step 3:

Launch Redsn0w 0.9.6b2 and point it to iOS 4.1 (Final Version, NOT iOS 4.2) to proceed with the jailbreak.

Step 4:

Now select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”. Optionally (if available), you can also select any other option you like.

Step 5:

Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click “Next”.

Now you will be presented with a screen where you will have to hold “Power” button and then while holding the “Power” button, you will now have to hold “Home” button too. Now after few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.

Step 6:

Sit back and enjoy while redsn0w will do all the rest for you. Once done, your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch will restart automatically and you will find it jailbroken on the latest iOS 4.2 firmware.

Note:

We have gotten reports that the RedSn0w jailbreak for iPad on 4.2 by pointing to iOS 3.2.2 does NOT work. So except for the iPad, Redsn0w jailbreak on iOS 4.2 is working fine on all iPhones and iPod touches.
