For Wingsuit Proximity Fliers, Every Leap is One of Faith

More than skydiving or traditional BASE jumping, wingsuit proximity flying takes that larger-than-life, Imax-theater feeling of falling to your certain death to new heights.

If you’re not familiar, let’s break it down because each of those words are ever so crucial to defining this

sport’s palm-sweating awesomeness. Flying: Well, that’s self-explanatory. You’re flying (by way of jumping) from somewhere high. Wingsuit: In order to maintain flight and time aloft, you’re fitted with a snug-fitting outfit that essentially gives you bat wings.

Then there’s proximity. Ah, that’s the real devil in the details, because in this case you’re purposely maintaining proximity to sharp, craggy rock and cliff formations as you’re descending toward earth at more than 100 miles per hour.

Now, where this gets really incredible is when said jumpers, like Jokke Sommer, decide to strap on a tiny camera to their left foot as they’re engaging in this most insane of activities. For this, you’ll want to stretch the video to the width of your computer screen. (Warning: Those with extreme vertigo or a fear of heights might find this wholly unbearable, but watch it anyway.)

Given the choice, I’d actually rather scale a transmission tower that’s 1,768 feet high. But that’s just me.
