The iPhone Dev Team has finally released PwnageTool 4.1 which is based on recently released Geohot’s bootrom-based Limera1n exploit. This exploit enables this new version of PwnageTool to build custom firmware files for A4 devices like iPhone 4, iPad, Apple TV 2G and iPod touch 4G which was something, previously not possible.

Supported Devices:

• AppleTV 2G
• iPad (firmware 3.2.2)
• iPod touch 4G
• iPod touch 3G
• iPhone4
• iPhone 3GS
• iPhone 3G

As per the official iPhone Dev-Team Blog:

AppleTV 2G users:  Welcome to the JB family!  Right now, about all you can do is command-line stuff via ssh.  You also have afc2 available, so you can use tools like ifunbox to move files around.  These are the *very* early days of AppleTV 2G jailbreaking, so it’ll take some time for JB app developers to come up with methods to use your AppleTV 2G from the remote, versus the command line.  PS: Your ssh password is “alpine”…please change it when you can

How To Jailbreak Apple TV 2G iOS 4.1 With PwnageTool 4.1:

Step 1:

• Download iOS 4.1 for Apple TV 2G [Mirror 1]
• Download PwnageTool 4.1 [Mirror 1] [Mirror 2]
• Download and install the latest version of iTunes.

Step 2:

Open the downloaded PwnageTool.dmg and copy the PwnageTool.app to your desktop and run it.

Hit the OK button.

Step 3:

Select Expert Mode from the top left side of the window.

and then select your device, and hit the Next button.

Step 4:

Hit the Browse for IPSW button and select iOS 4.1 firmware for your device (downloaded from Step 1).

Step 5:

Select General and hit the Next arrow button.

Step 6:

Keep hitting Next button until you’re back to the same screen where you selected General. Now Select the Build Option and Hit Next.

PwnageTool will prompt you to select a destination folder to save custom iOS 4.1.

PwnageTool will start building your Custom IPSW.

During the build process it’ll prompt you for your admin password.

Step 7:

Now follow the following steps to enter DFU mode:

• Connect your Apple TV with your Computer via microUSB.
• Now reboot your Apple TV by holding down Menu + Down buttons together for around 6 seconds.
• After reboot, immediately hold Menu + Play until you see the message in iTunes saying that Apple TV in recovery mode is detected.

Step 8:

You will now have to restore your Apple TV 2G to this custom firmware 4.1 file. In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and hit Restore. From the popup window, browse to the Folder where you saved custom iOS 4.1 and select you custom .ipsw file that you just created and click Open Button. (Make sure you’re selecting custom firmware, Not official one)

Step 9:

Now sit back and enjoy as iTunes does the rest for you. This will involve a series of automated steps. Be patient at this stage and just wait while iTunes installs the new firmware 4.1 on your Apple TV 2G. After the installation is done, your Apple TV 2G will restart automatically and you should now have a jailbroken Apple TV with full root access, running on iOS 4.1.
