A mixture of religious tension and street politics — fueled by sensational reporting on state television — has brought Cairo to a boil.
After one of their churches in upper Egypt was burned, Coptic Christians organized a demonstration in downtown Cairo calling for an investigation into the church attack and better security for the minority community. Central security forces and the military responded with unchecked violence. Now, more than 24 people are dead. And many Egyptians are left wondering if their transition to democracy is spiraling out of control.
