Each Halloween season, the gourd geniuses at Maniac Pumpkin Carvers crank out crazy, creative (or is it “crazy creative”?) pumpkins with geeky gusto.
This year Marc Evan and Chris Soria (aka Master Carver Marc Maniac and Pumpkinsmith Chris Maniac, respectively) took their inspiration from art and rock ‘n’ roll.
“We have been having a blast playing with interpreting classic works of art and classic album covers and band artwork this season,” Evan said in an e-mail to Wired.com. “This year we worked on interpreting various famous pieces of art that inspire us. We also re-created album covers, movie posters and portraits of musicians.”
Evan and Soria, who started their pumpkin-carving enterprise seven years ago as a way to service bars and restaurants in New York City’s West Village and Lower East Side with ornamental jack-o’-lanterns, have also been doing live demonstrations of their carving skills this fall.
“Carving in front of a crowd has been so gratifying,” Evan said. “It’s helped inspire us to really try and push pumpkin as a new art medium.”
