Taiwanese studio Next Media Animation has blasted its re-creation of the MythBusters cannonball misfire onto the web, with a blow-by-blow video account of Tuesday’s bizarre incident.

The clip, embedded above, is an interesting interpretation of events that took place in Dublin, California, after a MythBusters experiment being performed at the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department bomb range got a little out of control. During the test, a cannonball took an unexpected bounce and flew into a nearby neighborhood, hitting houses and at least one vehicle.

The video shows the test and follows the flight of the wayward cannonball (which is branded with a MythBusters logo).

It’s pretty much like clockwork these days: A big (and usually offbeat) news story makes headlines, and within 24 hours NMA comes through with an animated take on the events. In the past the animators have put their unique spin on subjects as diverse as The Dark Knight Rises trailer, Transportation Security Administration groping incidents and Steve Jobs’ biography.

Nobody was hurt in the MythBusters incident, but the cannonball did (naturally) startle a few residents. The hosts of the Discovery Channel show — Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage — visited the affected homes Wednesday. The pair, who weren’t at the scene for the incident (contrary to NMA’s cartoon re-creation), are clearly glad the damage from the cannonball wasn’t worse.

“It’s true, a cannonball got away from a Mythbusters experiment in Dublin, CA,” Savage tweeted Wednesday. “Nobody hurt thank goodness. Jamie and I toured the damage. Now it’s back to SF, to meet and discuss how to keep this from ever happening again. Very intense. We’re SUPER relieved no one was hurt.”
