Since the release of iOS 4.3.3, the iPhone Dev team and iH8sn0w have released Redsn0w, PwnageTool and Sn0wbreeze to jailbreak iPhone, iPad 1, iPod Touch and Apple TV. The only iOS device that cannot be jailbroken currently is iPad 2. There was some hope about a jailbreak for iPad 2 as Comex had successfully jailbroken it as soon as it was launched. However, Apple was quick to fix the iPad 2 jailbreak vulnerability in iOS 4.3.1. So iPhone Dev team has released untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.x using i0nic’s method for all iOS 4.3.x supported iDevices except iPad 2. So if you’re eagerly waiting for it, here’s a quick update for you. The Chronic Dev Team has commented on the status of the iPad 2 jailbreak and 4.3.x support in Greenpois0n. Here’s what they had to say… As I’m sure many people have heard, Josh (posixninja) has recently been quoted saying the iPad 2 jailbreak is coming in “weeks”, I know I have been very publicly abrasive and non-commital on giving any kind of timeframe or comment on this matter, but at the behest of Josh (in conjunction with his need for a swift kick to the ass for motivation) we’re ALL going to hold him to that!!! I’m not going to get into extensive detail about this, but what I will say one of the missing puzzle pieces may have reared its head and cast a glance in our direction… take from that what you will. In the past I have also said that 4.3.x support was on hold for greenpois0n to focus on iPad 2 jailbreak exclusively, our course has slightly changed (primary focus has never shifted from iPad 2 since it was released) it has now become possible to easily update and execute a workflow to enable RC6.2 (tentatively speaking… mmm #dirt) to be released “soon”… There was some excitement last weekend when Joshua Hill also known as p0sixninja from the Chronic Dev Team (who had revealed that they’re working on iPad 2 jailbreak) mentioned that the iPad 2 jailbreak could be released in the next few weeks during a live video discussion with MyGreatFest team. However, MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev team has clarified in a series of tweets that p0sixninja was just speculating and there hasn’t been much progress made on the iPad 2 jailbreak front. The Apple “news blogs” are once again getting everything wrong. The ETA of “weeks” for iPad2 JB was just a guess. It could very well be months for public iPad2 JB. Pressing for ETA just causes guesstimates like that to get misquoted and mutated. the only iPad2 jailbreak progress to date has been from comex. Everything else is a misunderstanding. Note that the is nothing that /could/ be released for the iPad 2 jailbreak right now, so any “dates” or “timeframes” are pure speculation that initial iPad2 JB (the only one to date) can’t be redistributed without also including Apple code, which is not allowed So there is currently no estimate on when the jailbreak for iPad 2 will be released. MuscleNerd has advised iPad 2 users still on iOS 4.3 to avoid upgrading to iOS 4.3.x: until something for iPad2 is released, the only way to keep all possible options on the table is to keep it at 4.3 But as MuscleNerd has mentioned, there’re a lot of great things about iPad 2 that don’t need a jailbreak.
