sculpture, titled Precognitive, “is inspired by the spiritual belief throughout many cultures that a ‘third eye’ symbolizes clairvoyance, enlightenment or precognitive visions,” Conte told Wired.com in an e-mail. “The analog lenses used as the eyes divide white light into the three additive primary colors.”

It’s the latest piece of sci-fi sculpture from Conte, a prostheticist-turned-artist whose previous work includes insectlike creations and a biomechanical mic stand.

The images dancing behind Precognitive’s eyes come from documentary The Color of War. “At first glance, it appears as though there is just a dim light source within the eyes, but upon closer examination you find it is actually miniature moving images of war footage,” Conte said of his creation, which stands 12 inches tall, and is 5 inches wide and 8 inches deep.

The skull and teeth are custom-made using polyurethane, with the eyes made from the “hacked innards of a large, shoulder-type professional video camera,” Conte said. “That triple lens component (which has been embellished and modified beyond recognition) takes the video from the iPod (installed inside the back of the head) and divides and carries the image to the front three lenses.”
