Backup Your SHSH Blobs For An Untethered iOS 4.2 Jailbreak

As a friendly reminder – folks who rely on a jailbreak/unlock must save their SHSH blobs for iOS 4.1 for iPhone and iPod Touch and iOS 3.2.2 for iPad in order to retain un-tethered jailbreak.

A tethered jailbreak means that if you ever need to reboot your already jailbroken iPhone or your iPhone loses battery charge, you’ll need to connect your iPhone to your computer and use GreenPois0n or Limera1n to re-jailbreak.

The iPhone Dev-Team has been repeatedly mentioning that having SHSH blobs for 4.1 will help keep your jailbreak untethered in the future, if you haven’t already done so, please SAVE YOUR SHSH BLOBS WITH TINYUMBRELLA, you can refer to the guide here or use the links below. Even when iOS 4.2 is released, the iPhone Dev-Team recommens staying on 4.1 to avoid potential tweak and application issues on 4.2. New major firmware releases have a tendency to break things in Cydia, so make sure developers have pushed out updates and things are working on 4.2 before updating.

Because the “untethered” part of this jailbreak comes from a userland hack from @comex, you should still backup your SHSH hashes for 4.1.  Do this by either letting Cydia keep them (“make my life easier”), or using Tiny Umbrella.   This way you can always come back to an untethered, jailbreakable 4.1 on your devices after Apple has closed their 4.1 signing window (they’ll close the 4.1 window once they push out their next firmware version). If you fail to do this and ever need to restore to 4.1 again, you can still jailbreak but it will be a tethered JB (you’ll need to connect to your computer to finish the booting process, each and every time).

As for the unlock for iPhone 3GS, 3Gusers with baseband 05.14.02 (and probably 5.15.04 as well, if that’s the official baseband for iOS 4.2) will be out soon after the public release of iOS 4.2. There is no ETA for a new iPhone 4 iOS 4.1 unlock, so please be patient and wait for the Dev Team to update it.
