Unless you’ve been living in an isolation chamber, you’ve probably heard of Tron: Legacy.

It’s

been difficult to ignore Disney’s deluge of hype for its upcoming sci-fi movie: The scavenger-hunt-style viral campaign, the dead-on re-creation of Flynn’s Arcade at Comic-Con International, the fake news conferences, the never-ending torrent of movie trailers and music videos. (How many Tron soundtrack fake-outs have you downloaded?)

Storyboard Podcast:
Episode 35

The original flick never got this much attention. Written and directed by Steven Lisberger, it starred a young Jeff Bridges as hacker Kevin Flynn.

The film was action-packed, full of never-before seen movie technology — totally futuristic. It was also a sci-fi fail: Disney expected it to make big bucks, but Tron only pulled in $4.8 million of a projected $10 million on its opening weekend in 1982.

Will the Tron reboot make up for the mainstream flop of the first one? Who cares? Tron: Legacy has light cycles. And according to Adam Rogers, Wired senior editor and Storyboard podcast host, you are going to love this movie.

Why? Rogers goes deep into his reasoning in “Tron’s Triumphant Return to Cyberspace,” his December cover story for Wired. The article delves into the cultural importance of the original flick, reveals how Disney came to take a risk on the movies and why every geek out there should care.

During his reporting, Rogers acquainted himself with every cybercorner of the Tron-iverse. In this edition of Storyboard, he geeks out about the original movie and the upcoming sequel with Chris Baker, another Wired senior editor. Put this on your iPod so you have something to listen to while you line up for Tron: Legacy’s Dec. 17 opening. You’re not in line yet? Amateurs.
