Apple released the firmware – build 8M89 for the second generation Apple TV that is already shipping. Based on the name of the firmware file which is AppleTV2,1_4.1_8M89_Restore.ipsw it appears to be a version of iOS 4.1 that Apple released a few weeks back for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It finally confirms that the new Apple TV will be based on the iOS, which has been something that has been widely speculated. The iPhone Dev Team has also managed to successfully jailbreak the Apple TV firmware using the SHAtter exploit. Their achievement was announced on their blog:
It’s looking like SHAtter is going to be the gift that keeps on giving. Even though the new AppleTV isn’t yet in people’s homes, the firmware is available on Apple’s normal public distribution servers and SHAtter has been used to decrypt its keys!
This means that the iPhone hacking community could bring jailbreak apps to Apple TV via the Cydia App Store or enable it to run Hulu. It will also be interesting to see when Apple opens up the Apple TV platform to developers. We see a revolution coming to the television space if that happens.
Are you one of the people who has already ordered the new Apple TV? Do you plan to order it after hearing that it can be jailbroken? Tell us in the comments section below!
