Microsoft has been working on and discussing a Windows Phone 7 update since long before Windows Phone 7 was even released. While the OS’ launch was a bit rushed, we still have to commend Microsoft for taking a pretty open stance and choosing to talk about upcoming functionality instead of shrugging off inquiries as most companies do. WP7 users should be happy to learn that many of the upcoming features Microsoft had been discussing could be coming as soon as January in a major update. So far, the update is said to have the following features:

  • Bing turn-by-turn directions, improvements
  • Custom ringer support
  • Copy/Paste
  • Multi-tasking (of some form)

According to the Windows Phone 7 developer and hacker, Chris Walsh, who claims to have insider knowledge of the update, Microsoft’s software bump will be “massive.” Expected features include those many have been anticipating for a while, such as copy/paste, free voice-guided Bing navigation, custom ringtone support, a third-party multitasking solution, and more. In recent tweets from Chris Walsh, the following conversation and information was acknowledged:

I’m hearing the first #WP7 update is going to be MASSIVE!

@tomhounsell Haha, they’ve been working on this update long before they actually shipped v1:

@ keyboardP As @tomhounsell said, MS took 3 months to do what Apple did in 3 years. ;-)

@adamUCF Let’s just say, they could have called it Windows Phone 8 :P

Needless to say, all of this functionality is sorely missed in Windows Phone 7 as it stands today. Features which should be core features might help make the OS much more popular than it is today.
