There is going to be a new TV set that is going to be rolling into town and the brains behind it are confident that they will give Apple TV and Google TV a run for their money. The rumors are associated to Microsoft’s own TV subscription in the pipeline.

It sounds a bit far fetched at first, why would Microsoft go ahead and try to implement an old idea, one that two major competitors have been working on already. Then you think about it and realize, the hardware is already in the form of the Xbox 360 gaming console that will be used for the same purpose. It isn’t exactly a surprise, considering the Xbox 360 is the best selling gaming console in the US. A virtual operator, which is what many are hearing about Microsoft’s upcoming initiatives and it is already in talks with numerous content providers. Other than going ahead with the full fledge option for content subscription for consumers, the software giant would enable single channel subscription like HBO, Showtime, etc. It makes some sense, considering the fact that not everyone wants to pay for all the options when all they watch is one.

It won’t exactly be a bad thing to have another option to choose from in the TV category but it isn’t likely to see success considering Apple has a huge lead in the existing and upcoming market. This is all the case even though the Apple TV comes with limited-to-no storage capacity but is extremely cheap. Google TV for instance, was initially accepted warmly in the market and streamed content from numerous stations but it all backfired as most of these networks ended up blocking Google TV devices. If we come back to the Microsoft proposed TV, it is still quite a long way off and the sources who revealed this information mentioned it taking well over 7 to 8 months for it to enter the market.

We do hope though that Microsoft ends up really ambitious to offer and push past a desirable share in the TV category. If they don’t it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Microsoft TV ending up being a distant third in terms of market share though it has had impressive Kinect sales with a record of 2.5 million Kinects sold in less than a month.
