SAN DIEGO — What happens when aliens attack a South London council estate? Basically, the extraterrestrials don’t stand a chance.

Joe Cornish, director of energetic sci-fi film Attack the Block, grew up in South London and wanted to capture the spirit of the place. So he hired a cast straight off the block, most of whom had never acted before.

“We’ve got 11 actors between the ages of 10 and 17,” Cornish says in the video interview above. “Apart from two of them, none of them have been in front of a camera before.”

Attack the Block stars John Boyega, Jodie Whittaker and Alex Esmail. In the video, we asked Cornish about the process of shooting Attack the Block on 35mm and how the filmmakers muddled through the process.
