True Blood dreamboat Ryan Kwanten is one of the last people you’d expect to appear in a movie about LARPing. And that’s exactly what makes his enthusiasm for the new movie so endearing.

Kwanten plays Joe, a guy whose friends, played by Steve Zahn and Peter Dinklage, take him on a LARPing weekend in order to cheer him up after he loses his job and his girlfriend. After that, it’s all fun and games until someone summons an honest-to-goodness succubus.

“It’s the world of LARPing … gone awry,” says Kwanten in the Wired.com video interview above. “I wake up and I’m in the middle of this LARPing game…. So I sort of go along with it to keep them happy and suddenly these crazy, crazy things start happening.”

Kwanten, who also plays a slightly less-than-super hero in the upcoming movie Griff the Invisible, stopped by the Wired Café at Comic-Con International to talk about his role in Knights of Badassdom and why the film’s great reception at the San Diego convention got him so excited.

Kwanten said having the film get a huge Saturday afternoon panel in Comic-Con’s famed Hall H was “a nice vote of confidence” in Badassdom, and called rubbing shoulders with adoring fans a “nice ego boost.”
