Arwen and Éowyn

Arwen and Éowyn from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as reimagined by Hungarian poster artist Szoki.

Hungarian artist Szoki has a keen eye for two things: a futuristic-looking art deco style and the beautiful women in geek-staple movies.

For his latest posters, Szoki took on The Lord of the Rings characters Arwen and Éowyn, showing the ladies of Middle-earth in images that would’ve looked right at home framed on the wall of a 1930s movie theater.

Prior to the Lord of the Rings images, the Budapest native (born Szokolai Gergely) tackled many characters from the Star Wars franchise — including Darth Vader and Princess Leia (natch).

“I’m a great fan of the 1940s and ’50s American pinup art, and lately the art deco period has been inspiring me,” Szoki said in an e-mail to Wired.com. “So the Leia, as well as these current LOTR posters, are just a fortunate marriage of those elements.” In a series called “Boogey Men,” the artist focused on crazed characters from classic horror flicks (Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers).

To create the images, Szoki, who makes a living as a freelance illustrator, starts out with paper sketches, then moves his drawings into Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. He’s been known to spend a couple weeks on any one project (he said he spent nearly 20 hours on the two Lord of the Rings images).

Check out some of Szoki’s geekiest artwork in the gallery above, and see even more on his website. Currently his pieces aren’t for sale, but he said he hopes to offer his images as high-res files people could use for posters or T-shirts starting next year.
