YouTube mashup artist Kutiman has released his first cover, a remake of Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” in which dozens of would-be Robert Plants and Jimmy Pages attempt the legendary rock song.

“It was more of an instinctive decision,” Kutiman told Wired.com in an e-mail when asked about the choice for his first tribute effort, dubbed “My Favorite Band” and uploaded to YouTube late last week. “Led Zeppelin is one of my favorite bands, actually one of a few bands I was listening to growing up in a small village. Working on this song was great fun with a touch of nostalgia.”

The Israeli artist rose to prominence after his 2009 project ThruYou mashed together the work of a variety of musicians who had uploaded their work to YouTube. He has since gone on to create other impressive works, including this year’s “Thru Jerusalem,” which turned his tour of the holy city into a musical excursion.

Kutiman’s patchwork version of “Black Dog” remains impressively faithful to Zeppelin’s original arrangement. The meta-homage proves a little mind-blowing when you see how many YouTube artists have done their own versions of the riff-heavy 1971 song. Members of any band would have a tough time finding a more concise representation of their legacy than seeing countless fans attempting to replicate their work within the context of a single track.

An earlier rough cut of “My Favorite Band” was released at DocAviv, a documentary film festival in Israel. Kutiman has been the artist of the season for this year’s Jerusalem Season of Culture, and his work was featured at New York’s Guggenheim Museum last October.
