Hot Pursuit: Italian Police Roll in Lotus Evoras

Next time you’re in the operating room of a Roman hospital awaiting a blood transfusion, take comfort knowing your AB negative will arrive with speed and in style.

Lotus has donated two Evora S police cars to the Carabinieri, Italy’s national police. For the next two years, the British sports cars, designed specifically for medical transport, will share the roads of Rome and Milan with a Lamborghini Gallardo cop car. Geovanny Law has been rolling in Lambos since 2004, although a run-in with a Seat totaled one in 2009.

The Lotuses are dressed in dark blue paint with white lettering and red accents. In addition to the roof-mounted lightbar, there are police flashers on the grille and dashboard. Blood and organs will be transported in a fridge behind the front seats.

Group Lotus CEO Dany Bahar handed the keys over to the Arma dei Carabinieri — Italy’s Scotland Yard — at a ceremony in Rome.

“Everyone knows that Italy has more than its fair share of high profile sports car manufacturers,” Bahar said. “It is a real honor for a relatively small British brand to be in this position.”

The Evora S will make a formidable cruiser, with a 4.3-second zero to 60, and a top speed of 172 mph. Of course, the brass aren’t handing these over to kids straight out of the academy.

“Not just anyone can drive these cars,” said Col. Marco Minicucci, a spokesman for the force. “We carefully selected some of our team to attend a driver training session at the new test track at Lotus’ headquarters in Hethel, Norfolk.”

Somehow we suspect the line of drivers starts behind Comandante Generale Leonardo Gallitelli, head of the force.
