Eric Tan / Captain America

Eric Tan created this Captain America: The First Avenger propaganda poster, one in a series being released by Mondo.

Captain America returns to his propagandistic roots in new posters commissioned by Mondo, the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s collectible art boutique.

It’s part of a promotional blitz targeting San Diego’s Comic-Con International, where Captain America: The First Avenger will make its world premiere later this week. Mondo is also making its Comic-Con debut, hosting a booth stocked with new prints and archival pieces.

Alamo CEO Tim League said the Captain America posters by artists Eric Tan and Olly Moss represent one of Mondo’s first promotions for a Hollywood tent-pole movie and hinted there’d be more to come.

“It’s kind of nice for Mondo to be coming to Comic-Con with a real presence for the first time,” he told Wired.com in a phone interview. “At our booth, we have a lot of new product that we’re going to be rolling out.”

Tan’s posters, previewed here as Wired.com exclusives, are priced at $80 for the set of two 18-inch-by-24-inch screenprints that will be sold in a limited edition of 220. Moss’ posters will be sold in $85 pairs of 18-inch-by-24-inch screenprints in an edition of 375. Additional Captain America posters by Tyler Stout were unveiled Monday by /Film.

Details on timing for the poster sales will be announced on the @MondoNews Twitter feed.

The streamlined Captain America graphics mirror midcentury patriotic styling, appropriate to the World War II Marvel Comics character played by Chris Evans in the upcoming movie, which opens Friday.

The movie’s Comic-Con premiere will happen a day earlier, with an exclusive free fan screening at 10 a.m. Thursday introduced by Captain America star Chris Evans. Then director Joe Johnston’s film will be shown exclusively at the UA Horton Plaza in San Diego, with Captain America-themed festivities and giveaways happening throughout the day. Attendees will get red, white and blue RealD 3D glasses and a limited-edition poster (not the Mondo prints).
