OK, we admit it: We love Nissan’s ‘polar bear’ ad for the Nissan Leaf. It works on several levels, not the least of which is putting a face, of sorts, on the issue of global climate change.

The ad is a new direction for Nissan, which has been using its “Shift” campaign for eight years but is embracing “Innovation for All” as its new brand theme. The Nissan Leaf electric car “is the

poster child for innovation,” Jon Brancheau, vice president for Nissan marketing at Nissan North America, told The New York Times. The ad, created by TBWA/Chiat/Day, doesn’t emphasize “innovation for innovation’s sake” but rather focuses on “human-centric innovation,” creative director Rob Schwartz told the Times.

Nissan’s polar bear ad made its debut Thursday. If you haven’t seen it, it tells the story of a bear who, faced with melting glaciers and dwindling ice sheets, treks through unfamiliar territory to an unnamed suburb, where she hugs the owner of a Nissan Leaf. It combines a plea for environmental conservatism with a bit of humor while tugging at the heart and making you think.

The ad stars a real polar bear named Agee and it was made with a mix of live action, documentary footage and CGI. For all the details, check out the video. You can see the ad in its entirety at the end of the clip.
